[ARCHIVED] Ice Storm Debris Cleanup Extended

City of East Lansing News Release 14-066 (March 26, 2014)
EAST LANSING, Mich. – East Lansing residents have until Monday, April 7 to place any remaining ice storm debris at the curb for free collection by the East Lansing Department of Public Works (DPW). Crews will be making their final passes through neighborhoods after that time.

Storm debris includes any large branches or limbs in residents’ yards as a result of last December’s ice storm. All storm debris can be placed at the curb as is; residents are not expected to cut items in half or bundle them. Residents should use caution when cleaning up their yards and may want to consider hiring a professional to clear larger branches and unstable trees.

Patience with curbside pickup of ice storm debris is appreciated. Community members with questions can contact DPW at (517) 337-9459.

Yard Waste Collection to Begin Monday, April 7
East Lansing residents are also reminded that the City’s yard waste collection will begin Monday, April 7 and will run through Nov. 24. Spring no-fee collection days will be offered April 21 and May 12.

Yard waste includes leaves, plant materials, grass clippings and brush/limbs. There are three convenient options to contain yard waste, including:

§ City paper yard waste bags (bags must weigh no more than 40 pounds).

§ Rigid plastic container (no larger than 32 gallons) or paper bag with City yard waste sticker (do not use Easy Carts or plastic bags to dispose of yard waste).

§ Bundled (with string or twine) with a City yard waste sticker. Bundles may not be more than four feet long and one foot in diameter and must weigh no more than 40 pounds. Individual limbs must be four inches or less.

City bags and stickers can be purchased at various locations throughout East Lansing, including, but not limited to DPW, 1800 E. State Road, and East Lansing City Hall, 410 Abbot Road.

Curbside collection of yard waste takes place on Mondays (excluding holidays) and advanced collection requests are required. Residents can visit www.cityofeastlansing.com/collectionrequest or call DPW at (517) 337-9459 (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.) to request a collection. Online requests must be made by 7:30 a.m. on the Monday of collection and phone requests must be made by 5 p.m. on the Friday prior to the Monday collection.

Residents can dispose of yard waste for free on Monday, April 21 and Monday, May 12. City yard waste bags and stickers are not required, but items must still be contained within a paper yard waste bag/rigid plastic container or bundled and placed at the curb by 7:30 a.m. Advanced collection requests are not required.
